THE CLASSIFICATION OF 1,200 TYPES OF HERBAL MEDICINES
Since ancient times, many enthusiastic physicians have devoted
their efforts to curing cancer in civil groups in China. Through
their constant efforts, they have been able to correct mistakes
and achieve remarkable success. When I made up my mind to wage war
on cancer, I sought to learn the process of prescription making
from these physicians in order to develop more effective herbal
medicines. This was particularly true because my hometown was near
Changbaishan – the treasury of Chines medicinal herbs.
At about this period I left my home village for Haicheng City in
Liaoning Province to serve as a medical orderly in an army regiment.
This was a very good opportunity for me, since I had access to a
well-equipped medical facility and library that were even better
than what we had in my village. After work, I spent long hours reading
medical books. Through conversations with soldiers from different
places, I gradually understood how cancer was cured in various parts
of China. On my out-bound and itinerant training I made use of my
free time by visiting physicians in the nearby districts, knocking
at their doors, asking them about their prescriptions, which I studied
and rearranged. In this way, during the four years I served as a
medical orderly in the army, I managed to collect over eight hundred
formulas of prescriptions.
It became apparent that my early arrogant presumption that I would
be able to write prescriptions by myself was a mistake. The ten
years that followed were like living in a dream. I spent all my
money acquiring prescriptions from civic circles all over China,
and I had acquired more than four thousand of them. Yet it was meaningless
to merely collect such cancer curing prescriptions. I had to classify
some one thousand two hundred herbal medicines to identify the most
efficacious prescriptions.
Through my own research I classified the prescriptions into four
main categories, namely those responsible for:
Clearing away heat and toxic materials (the effects of heat removal
and toxins release)
Promoting blood circulation by removal of blood stasis (clearance
of passage in blood channels, removal of areas of bruises
Alleviating pain and dissolving lumps (cessation of pain and removal
of conglomerated material)
Replenishing the vital energy and nourishing the blood (replenishment
of the original vital energy in the body and supply of nutrients
to the bloods
Chemical treatment in western medical science uses radiology, surgery,
medicines and so forth. These methods damage health cells in the
course of killing cancer cells. The overall concept in Chinese prescriptions
is embodied in my four classifications. Cancer does not constitute
a disease that attacks only one part of the body. The individual
as a whole feels the discomfort it causes. In "eliminating
pathogenic factors and supporting healthy energy," Chinese
prescriptions can be said to take consideration of the overall situation
of the whole patient.
However, in view of the advent and development of western medicine
in China, the principles underlying Chinese prescriptions have been
considered to run counter to modern medical thought, and outdated
in the domain of anti-cancer therapy. When I began my research in
the 1970s, plant based cures for cancer attracted the attention
of the cancer specialists from developed countries all over the
world. To me, this fact was very encouraging and exciting. It motivated
my desire to use Chinese prescriptions in the development of a cure
for cancer.
